Starships

Starships is the game project I’ve been working on for something like 18 months now. I plan on making it a sort of capital ship simulation. Think one of the BC games crossed with Rules of Engagement crossed with the crew management aspects of Silent Hunter.

The latest version (currently v. 0.10.4) will always be found here. (Windows XP. Other Windows systems not heavily tested). If, for some reason, you’d like to check out older versions (which are not supported), you can browse the Starships directory here.

You can check out my development goals (not exhaustive) here. Red items haven’t been started on yet, blue items have had some work done, and green items are tentatively finished, though there has already been at least one instance where I’ve gone back and redone something that I had already marked as “finished”, and I’m sure there will be more as I get further along and need to change the architecture and layout of things.

Finally, a day by day (or at least, as often as I actually work on the thing) log of what I’ve actually done with the program, starting in late May, 2008, can be found here. Starting with v. 0.06.2, all this information is included in the README with each release, but if you’re the 0.2 people out there who want to actively follow development, it’s there for you.

  1. Pretty cool. I’ve been imagining a capital ship game for some time now (ever since playing Eve Online) but I was envisioning an MMO-style game where multiple players would crew a ship. This project sounds really interesting and I will surely keep an eye on it.

  2. Thanks. I’ve got pretty high (maybe too high?) hopes for it. Here’s hoping it all pans out.

As far as an MMO goes, I was never really planning on anything like that. I think it might be kind of boring to the the communications officer (for example) on a capital ship. It’s better for everyone to get to be a captain and in command of their own vessel.
